Alcyone Sail Training
Youth sail training
adult or family sailing adventures!
Thank you for your interest in sailing on the Alcyone. This is our 23rd year of
getting youth, families, and adults out on the water in a hands-on,
fun-while-you-learn sailing experience. This year we will be sailing from Port
Townsend, Washington, offering six and twelve-day trips as well as custom
trips. The six-day trips will be spent exploring the San Juan Islands. On our
twelve-day trips we cross the border into Canada with a destination of either
Desolation Sound or Barkley Sound. While not a luxury yacht, the
Alcyone is
roomy and comfortable. She offers a group of up to six people a memorable
sailing experience in some of the best cruising grounds in the world.

Our sail-training trips are for youth ages 12-18. For youth, sail-training
aboard the
Alcyone includes sailing, navigation, marlin spike seamanship,
chart reading, standing watches, small boat handling, knot tying and rigging:
student crew are exposed to all this as well as swimming, exploring and
adventure.

We also offer a special rate that makes it easier for families with children to
sail with us. Any combination of parents and children, that does not exceed
six, can charter the boat at a special "family" rate. We have raised our
daughters aboard the
Alcyone, and are accustomed to and enjoy sailing with
other families. Our definition of "children" goes through college aged young
adults, since we hope that our college aged daughter will still accompany us
on family vacations.

For adults we offer two types of trips: full boat charter by a single group
(
Alcyone sails with at most six guests aboard), or rent-a -bunk where you
reserve a spot aboard and we supply the other sailors.

We are just starting to work on our 2010 schedule. From now until January
we are booking full group adult or family trips. You can book a week in 2010
for 2009 prices, if you let us know before the end of January. On our 6-day
trips to the San Juan Islands, we board on Saturday and return on Thursday.
The sailing season starts in May; or if you are interested in a fall trip, we sail
through September/October. We can be more flexible with the schedule during
the spring and fall season. When spring comes it just feels like we should be
out on the water, the days are long everything is green and we get some our
best sailing. The fall is a beautiful time of year, with the colors changing and
the crowds of summer gone - a great time to experience the islands and enjoy
some great sailing.

Enjoy exploring the web site. There are slide shows on the Cruising
Destination, Sail Training, Adult and Family Trips and Layout pages. If you
have any question, e-mail or give us a call. We hope to have the opportunity to
sail with you sometime.

Fair winds,

Captains John "Sugar" Flanagan and Leslie McNish
